Heinz History Center and RiverQuest create history-themed tour

Sparked by the 250th anniversary of the founding of Pittsburgh, RiverQuest and the Senator John Heinz History Center have embarked on a new partnership to establish a four-hour combination tour that will premiere to school groups in Spring 2009.  RiverTour Pittsburgh is slated to include a 2-hour experience at the History Center, paired with a 2-hour environmental history voyage.

The tour combines the unique resources of exhibits and education programs at the Heinz History Center with the talents of the RiverQuest education and boat crew to provide a local history tour that can include industrial focuses like steel, coal and glass, to modern transformations such as green building and sustainable design.  The on-river segment of the program is planned to take place on board Explorer, RiverQuest's new green-designed boat.

Reserve Elementary Teacher and

River of Words Workshop Inspire Environmental Art

Visual Arts Educator Chris Lisowski has redefined "school" at Reserve Township Elementary!  After participating in last fall's River of Words Workshop put on by partners 3 Rivers Wet Weather, RiverQuest, The Arts Education Collaborative and Carnegie Museum of Art, Lisowski and his colleagues engages students in an exploration of the

connections between science and art.

Mr. Lisowski and his fourth graders are shown here displaying the paddlefish they created.  Paddlefish are an unusual species of plankton-eating fish found in the fresh waters of our three rivers. "Finding plankton on the RiverQuest boat and exploring the International Exhibit at Carnegie Museum of Art transformed how we looked at our rivers and the world around us," Lisowski said. "We all learned a lot from our field trips and had an enriching experience that will last a lifetime".

Major renovations have taken place on the railroad bridge at mile 3.1 on the Monongahela River.   Large colorful pipes that once carried utility lines have been removed from the sides. No longer sporting railroad tracks, the bridge has been converted to accommodate conventional motor vehicle traffic and a bicycle/pedestrian trail.

Why is it called the Hot Metal Bridge?
