This summer, six high school students will take part in the University of Pittsburgh Shortterm Training Education Experience in Research, or PITT-STEER.
The goal of the ten-week experience is to encourage entry of students into careers in biomedical research and environmental health science. Participating students will conduct original research under the mentored supervision of experts from the university's acclaimed Graduate School of Public Health, along with principal investigator Dr. Bruce Pitt, and a core of mentors funded by the National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences. Four days of the program will utilize the RiverQuest fleet and staff as platforms for research and learning about freshwater environments and environmental health.
Participating students represent selected individuals from a large and outstanding pool of candidates of emerging junior and senior high school students in the Pittsburgh Public School system, and is based on teacher recommendation, student transcripts, and student interest.
