RiverQuestion of the Month
July/August 2010

This July, RiverQuest marks the beginning of its 15th year of sailing to serve schools and the public out on the rivers of Pittsburgh. In the past decade-and-a-half, RiverQuest has welcomed more than 68,000 school students aboard, representing over 260 school buildings in 68 school districts. Tens of thousands more have participated in group and public programs on board, and in RQ activities at community events.

This month, Citizens Bank presented RiverQuest their "Champions in Action" award, in conjunction with WPXI and Pittsburgh Cares. The award includes a $25,000 contribution from Citizens Bank Foundation, public service announcements from WPXI, and volunteer support from both.

WWII Naval Ship in Pittsburgh this September

The Waterways Association of Pittsburgh has announced the visit of Landing Ship Tank (LST) 325, set for early September 2010.

LST 325 was part of the Normandy Armada on D-Day, June 6, 1944.  Built in Philadelphia in 1942, the ship is identical to the 269 LSTs built in Pittsburgh. LSTs were designed to nose ashore to discharge troops and heavy equipment.   This is the first appearance in local waters by an LST since WWII. The ship will be open for tours September 2–6, from 9:00am – 5:00pm at the North Shore near Heinz Field. Admission: School groups - $3/student; Children 6 to18 - $5 (5 years and under, free); Adults $10; Family price $20 (Parents, and School age Children). For more information, visit the USS LST Ship Memorial at www.lstmemorial.org.
