International Sustainability Camp concludes successful program

RiverQuest and Creek Connections joined forces to present the new Bayer Climate Fellows Sustainability Camp earlier this summer.  Five German high schoolers took part in the 5-day Creek Camp at Allegheny College, along with students from the US and Costa Rica.

At the conclusion of Creek Camp, the five German students returned to Pittsburgh with three American counterparts for another jam-packed week of ecology and sustainability-themed camp with RiverQuest.

The 2-week experience was sponsored by Bayer USA Foundation and Bayer Science Education Foundation.

Natrona Comes Together Association to host RiverQuest program in August

RiverQuest will travel up the Allegheny River this August 15 to provide a day of river education programs to citizens of Natrona, PA, hosted by Natrona Comes Together Association (NCTA).  Three environmental science-themed river tours for all ages will be conducted

on the 60-foot pontoon boat Miss Pittsburgh.

Pat Walters, NCTA Secretary and Event Chairperson, values the opportunities our rivers provide.  "As a former 'river rat' who had to be able to swim the river from shore to shore, I feel that our river is not as appreciated as it should be," Walters says.  "Our group is dedicated to improving our riverfront as well as teaching local residents - particularly the children - about one of our greatest assets."  NCTA will also host tours of National Historic Landmark Lock #4 in Natrona at no cost to interested residents on August 4.   For more information on these NCTA events, click the link below, or visit www.natronacomestogether.org.

RiverQuest WAVES from June 2008 featured a local teacher who incorporated environmental science into an elaborate art project: his students crafted large model paddlefish.

What's a paddlefish?  Do we have them in the rivers of Pittsburgh?
