Explorer gets underway

Univ. of Pittsburgh & Allderdice High School first schools to sail

Explorer is officially underway on the rivers of Pittsburgh.  With final Coast Guard approvals complete, the crew and staff have welcomed the first schools to sail aboard the new green flagship of RiverQuest.

University of Pittsburgh instructor Ward Allebach accompanied his undergraduate sustainability students on board for a 2-hour evening trip where students explored sustainability, freshwater environmental science, operations of a green vessel, and the nuances of the hybrid engine system that Explorer boasts.  "RiverQuest and their supporters are to be applauded because they have put their money where their mouth is to create this incredible new boat."  Pittsburgh Allderdice High School teacher Mike Carey brought 35 students on board Explorer a few days later, to delve into RiverQuest's signature study Environmental Science on the Three Rivers on a rainy Thursday morning.

Special thanks to the foundations, corporations, organizations and government agencies who had a hand in bringing this accomplishment to life, and to our faithful school groups. We look forward to welcoming everyone on board Explorer.

Across the Monongahela and Ohio Rivers from downtown, the Monongahela and Duquesne Inclines transport people safely up and down the steep slopes of Mount Washington. How many inclines have operated in Pittsburgh over the years?
